Simkins are hosting an event on 18 May: An Evening with…Carl Leighton-Pope
Carl Leighton-Pope is a colourful and amazingly driven manager, agent and promoter who has achieved remarkable success in the music business.
Carl was attracted by the music business and initially based himself in South Wales to manage a band called Sassafrass signed to Chrysalis Records in 1972. He subsequently joined NEMS where he achieved significant success and signed acts including Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Patti Smith, The Motors, UFO and Camel.
He formed the Performing Artists Network Agency in 1979 and extended his representation to acts including Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Huey Lewis, SAGA and The Fixx and went on to manage UFO. Carl then formed his own agency in 1984 signing Bryan Adams (with whom he still works) and in 1991 he founded the Leighton Pope Organisation. He developed Chippendales as a hugely successful act and worked with Bonnie Tyler and Van Morrison.
More recently he has achieved great success with Michael Bublé and with Keith Urban and Billy Ocean. The key to Carl’s success is development of new talent. In the past two years, Lake Street Dive, Todd Dorigo and Dagny began their journey with L-Po. In addition to the agency Carl has written and produced the musical ‘Carnaby Street’ which toured the UK in 2013 and will return in 2017.
Carl is an exceptionally entertaining speaker with an endless fund of stories which more than justify the colourful reputation enjoyed by the music business providing a fascinating insight into an industry that was the hub of a social revolution.
